OPENING KEYNOTE | The Electrification Challenge and the Role of Heat Pumps

Exhibit Hall A

Bryan Flannigan, P.Eng. - Executive Director, Building Decarbonization Alliance

This session will set the context by painting a picture of what the future of building electrification might look like when it achieves the scale necessary to meet the country’s climate goals. The session will explore questions about the role the HVAC industry can play to get Canada and BC to that scale more rapidly.

The rise in demand for heat pump solutions is not just a result of government policies and incentives.  Increasingly, it’s because they are the right solution for customers, in new and existing buildings. This industry panel will demonstrate the real-world economics that support the transition to heat pumps, as systems that cost-effectively deliver numerous benefits: comfort, energy savings and health benefits for building occupants while dramatically lowering carbon outputs.

4:30 pm - 5:00 pm

CLOSING KEYNOTE | Conquering the Cold: The Swedish Blueprint for Zero-Carbon Living.

Exhibit Hall A

Martin Forsen - President, European Heat Pump Association

Once dominated by a reliance on fossil fuels (heating oil), homes and buildings in Sweden have been utterly transformed by heat pumps. In less than two decades, the country almost entirely phased out oil- and electric boilers and introduced heat pumps as the clearly best choice. Today more than 60% of all single-family homes are heated by a heat pump. Greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by more than 90% in the heating sector, efficiency has been greatly improved and, remarkably, at the same time the use of electricity for heating has decreased.  This presentation will describe how the transformation took place and the benefits it generated in the process.  There are important lessons here for Canadians.
